Accessible Special Effects in Theatre:
A Guide to Design and Implementation
MFA Thesis Project, 2025
University of Cincinnati Conservatory (CCM)
Apple shot effect from The Addams Family, created as part of a thesis on making special effects accessible. The setup uses a large PVC pipe in the back connected to a smaller one in the front. The arrow loads in the back with a stopper at the end, letting most of the arrow pass through the smaller PVC but preventing the end from exiting the large pipe. This allows the arrow to emerge from the scenery but not exit it. A pressure cap with a hole for a dowel is added at the end and a dowel is used to push the arrow forward.
As part of the thesis, an Instructables tutorial was created to help others replicate the prop. The full guide can be found here: https://www.instructables.com/Create-an-Apple-Shot-Special-Effect-for-the-Addams/
