Accessible Special Effects in Theatre:
A Guide to Design and Implementation
MFA Thesis Project, 2025
University of Cincinnati Conservatory (CCM)
Enchanted Rose from Beauty and the Beast, created as part of a thesis on making special effects accessible. Electromagnets are hidden in the leaves and control via a wireless remote. Washers were attached to the back of each petal so when the remote turns the magnets off the petals drop. The cloche was made from a cut 2-liter bottle and a thrifted bowl. Because the goal was for the project to be replicable at a community theatre or high school level, it was designed with no soldering or wiring required.
As part of the thesis, an Instructables tutorial was created to help others replicate the prop. The full guide can be found here: https://www.instructables.com/Beauty-and-the-Beast-Enchanted-Rose-Remote-Control/
